International Folklore Film Festival 2025

The International Folklore Film Festival, which began in Thrissur in 2017, is successfully entering its eighth year. This year also, the festival brings with it several new features. Filmmakers of international renown from various countries would be participating in this event. Many outstanding films would be screened in the festival amongst which there would be screening of certain theme-based films also. As a part of the festival, in different venues across Kerala and also outside the state, there would be interesting discussions and film screenings, thus giving an international, multi-cultural dimension to the festival.

As the style and pattern of organizing the festival and staging the films become more elaborate and simultaneously decentralized, great care is being given to ensure that the political and cultural essence of the festival remains intact. A crucial factor governing folklore of any kind is the transmission and exchange of the elements of folklore among all people globally, across the various times, places and cultures. But this cultural diversity, this cultural exchange, is under the constant threat by the unbalanced, bigoted developments taking place world over. Such threats could obstruct the very continuity of folklore and could tamper with this cultural communication that occurs between humans. The communication system plays a significant role in deciding what a society should be and how it should be.

Folklore is a melting pot of various social energies. When the natural process of exchange of these social energies cease, they evolve, they seek new exchange possibilities and new dimensions and thus adapt to the changing environments. The evolution of folk lore to folk cinema should be evaluated thus.

Folklore simultaneously becomes a discourse that empowers both cinema and folk culture, retrieving the roots and paths of culture that enable people's history and survival. There is a social and cultural resistance in folklore; there is revivalism, religion and secularism in folklore. We invite all friends to come, discuss and witness these aspects at the festival.

ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ ഫോക്ക് ലോർ ഫിലിം ഫെസ്റ്റിവൽ 2025.

2017-ൽ തൃശ്ശൂരിൽ ആരംഭിച്ച ഇന്റർനാഷണൽ ഫോക്ക് ഫിലിം ഫെസ്റ്റിവൽ അതിൻറെ എട്ടാമത് വർഷത്തിലേക്ക് വിജയകരമായി പ്രവേശിക്കുകയാണ്. ഈ വർഷവും ഒട്ടേറെ പുതുമകളുമായാണ് ഫെസ്റ്റിവൽ എത്തിച്ചേരുന്നത്. നിരവധി രാജ്യങ്ങളിലായി ഒട്ടേറെ ലോകശ്രദ്ധ നേടിയ സിനിമാപ്രവർത്തകർ ഇതിൽ പങ്കെടുക്കുന്നു. ശ്രദ്ധേയമായ നിരവധി സിനിമകൾ പ്രദർശിപ്പിക്കുന്നു. അതോടൊപ്പം വിഷയാധിഷ്ഠിതമായ സിനിമ പ്രദർശനങ്ങളും നടക്കുന്നു. കേരളത്തിനകത്തും പുറത്തും പല വേദികളിലായി വ്യത്യസ്തതയാർന്ന സംവാദങ്ങളും സിനിമ പ്രദർശനങ്ങളും ഇതിന്റെ ഭാഗമായുണ്ടാകും. അതുകൊണ്ടുതന്നെ അന്താരാഷ്ട്രമായ മാനവും ബഹുസ്വരമായ സ്വഭാവവും ഈ ഫെസ്റ്റിവലിന്റെ സവിശേഷതയായി തീരുന്നു. സംഘാടനവും അരങ്ങൊരുക്കവും കൂടുതൽ വിപുലവും വികേന്ദ്രീകൃതവും ആകുമ്പോൾ തന്നെ രാഷ്ട്രീയവും സാംസ്കാരികവുമായ ഉള്ളടക്കത്തിന്റെ കാര്യത്തിൽ കഴിയുന്നത്ര സൂക്ഷ്മത പുലർത്താനുമാണ് ശ്രമിക്കുന്നത്.

ഏതൊരു ഫോക് ലോറിനെ സംബന്ധിച്ചും പരമപ്രധാനമായ ഒരു ഘടകം അതിന്റെ വിനിമയമാണ്. അത് ജനതയ്ക്കിടയിൽ വിനിമയം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുക എന്നതിനർത്ഥം അത് പല കാലങ്ങളിലേക്കും സ്ഥലങ്ങളിലേക്കും സംസ്കാരങ്ങളിലേക്കും കൂടി വിനിമയം ചെയ്യപ്പെടുക എന്നാണ്. അസന്തുലിതവും ഏകപക്ഷീയവുമായ വികസനങ്ങൾ ലോകത്തിൻറെ സാംസ്കാരിക വൈവിധ്യങ്ങളെ ഇല്ലായ്മ ചെയ്യുന്നുണ്ട്. ഈ പ്രതിസന്ധിഘട്ടത്തിൽ ഫോക് ലോറുകൾക്ക് തുടർച്ചയില്ലാതാവുക എന്നതിനർത്ഥം ജനതയുടെ ആശയവിനിമയ വ്യവസ്ഥ തകരാറിലായിത്തീരുന്നു എന്നതുകൂടിയാണ്. ഒരു സമൂഹം എന്താകണം എങ്ങനെയാകണം എന്ന് തീരുമാനിക്കുന്നതിൽ ആശയവിനിമയ വ്യവസ്ഥയ്ക്ക് വലിയ പങ്കാണുള്ളത്. പലതരം സാമൂഹിക ഊർജ്ജങ്ങളെ സംവഹിക്കുന്നവയാണ് ഫോക് ലോറുകളിൽ ഏറെയും. അതിൻറെ സ്വാഭാവികമായ വിനിമയങ്ങൾ ഇല്ലാതാകുമ്പോൾ അത് പുതിയ വിനിമയ സാധ്യതകൾ തേടുകയും പുതുലോകത്തിന്റെ വിനിമയങ്ങളിലേക്ക് സ്വയം കണ്ണിചേരുകയും ചെയ്യും. അത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ഒരു പരിണാമമായിട്ടു കൂടി വേണം ഫോക് ലോറിൽനിന്ന് ഫോക് സിനിമയിലേക്കുള്ള പരിണാമത്തെ വിലയിരുത്താൻ.അത് ഒരേസമയം സിനിമയെയും ഫോക് സംസ്കൃതിയെയും ശാക്തീകരിക്കുന്ന വ്യവഹാരമായി മാറുന്നു.

അതിൽ ജനതയുടെ ചരിത്രത്തെയും നിലനിൽപ്പിനെയും സാധ്യമാക്കുന്ന സംസ്കാരത്തിൻറെ വേരും വഴിയും വീണ്ടെടുക്കാനും അതിനോടൊപ്പം പുതിയ ലോകത്തിലേക്ക് പ്രവേശിക്കാനും ഉള്ള ശ്രമമുണ്ട്. സാമൂഹ്യവും സാംസ്കാരികവുമായ പ്രതിരോധമുണ്ട്, പുനരുത്ഥാനവാദമുണ്ട്. മതവത്കരണവും മതനിരപേക്ഷതയും ഉണ്ട്. ഇവയെല്ലാം ചർച്ചചെയ്യാൻ, അതിന് സാക്ഷ്യം വഹിക്കാൻ എല്ലാ സുഹൃത്തുക്കളെയും ഫെസ്റ്റിവലിലേക്ക് ക്ഷണിക്കുന്നു.
